Item A Breadth-First Introduction to VFX: A Holistic Approach for Teaching the Visual Effects Production Pipeline(The Eurographics Association, 2019) Redford, Adam; Fodritto, Melania; Anderson, Eike Falk; Tarini, Marco and Galin, EricThis paper outlines a tried and tested breadth-first approach for teaching essential key areas of the visual effects post production pipeline to novices. Successfully used in a first semester course our holistic process guides the creation of a single self-contained visual effects shot (video sequence) of photorealistic quality. We provide an overview of course curriculum, organization and exercises (lessons covering the essential areas of visual effects production for creating each of the individual elements of the final shot, as well as the final shot construction and composition itself), outline the assessment and discuss the evolution of the course, which we consider a model of ''best practice'' for teaching the 3D artists' introductory computer graphics sequence.Item D.A.V.E: A Prototype for Automatic Environment Decoration(The Eurographics Association, 2019) Glover, Callum James; Anderson, Eike Falk; Fusiello, Andrea and Bimber, OliverTo fully immerse players in video games, elements of the game world must form a rich, coherent and believable universe, which is time consuming and expensive to achieve manually. We propose an artists' tool for Autodesk Maya to aid environment decoration, allowing artists to focus on the more important elements of the worlds they create.Item Digital Matte Painting - An Effective Undergraduate Assignment(The Eurographics Association, 2022) Redford, Adam; Anderson, Eike Falk; Bourdin, Jean-Jacques; Paquette, EricThis paper presents an effective digital matte painting assignment from a course delivered as part of an undergraduate degree programme in visual effects. The assignment involves the creation of a final 3D shot from an initial 2D image, using various 2D image manipulation tools and appropriate 2.5D image projection techniques.Item Reconstructing the Past: Outstanding Student-Created Virtual Heritage Experiences(The Eurographics Association, 2021) Anderson, Eike Falk; Sousa Santos, Beatriz and Domik, GittaIn recent years, Computer Graphics (CG) and related techniques have become increasingly important for the preservation and dissemination of Cultural Heritage (CH). Here we present a set of three excellent CH reconstructions and virtual heritage experiences created by final year undergraduate students from several computer animation related programmes of study in the course of an optional course on ''CG and Animation for Cultural Heritage''. The three projects discussed here are interactive heritage experiences, including a reconstruction of the tomb of Tutankhamun, an Augmented Reality (AR) reconstruction of the Iron Age hillfort Maiden Castle, and a Virtual Reality (VR) reconstruction of ancient Stonehenge.Item Recreating Past and Present: An Exceptional Student-Created Virtual Heritage Experience(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Anderson, Eike Falk; Sloan, Susan; Romero, Mario and Sousa Santos, BeatriceWe present an outstanding undergraduate student project in the form of a virtual heritage experience, created by a multidisciplinary group of six 4th semester undergraduate students from a range of computer graphics related programmes of study, ranging from 3D art and design to graphics software development. The "Exercise Smash" application allows participants to take part in a 1944 military exercise that was held in preparation of the D-Day landings in Normandy, during which several amphibious tanks sank, and then to dive down to the tank wrecks on the modern-day seafloor. The virtual heritage experience was presented during a public event at a military history museum and has also been demonstrated at an archaeology conference, being well-received in both cases.Item Streamlining Photogrammetry Reconstructions of Bone Fragments for Bioarchaeological Analysis, Conservation, and Public Engagement(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Redford, Adam; Mikulski, Richard; Anderson, Eike Falk; Ritschel, Tobias and Eilertsen, GabrielWe present a streamlined workflow for the 3D reconstruction of skeletal fragments, suitable for bioarchaeological analysis as well as public engagement and based on practices and applications from the feature film visual effects industry. Using a lowcost single-camera photogrammetry rig for close range photogrammetry and processing the results using standard 3D asset creation software from the visual effects industry, the resulting 3D models achieve a resolution that is sufficient for the clear representation of bone elements and any gross changes affecting them, such as severe trauma.Item Towards a Formal Education of Visual Effects Artists(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Redford, Adam; Anderson, Eike Falk; Magana, Alejandra; Zara, JiriThe rapid growth of the visual effects industry over the past three decades and increasing demand for high quality visual effects for film, television and similar media, in turn increasing demand for graduates in this field have highlighted the need for formal education in visual effects. In this paper, we explore the design of a visual effects undergraduate degree programme and discuss our aims and objectives in implementing this programme in terms of both curriculum and syllabus.Item Vegetable Matter Decay: An Exceptional Student 'Innovations' Project(The Eurographics Association, 2019) Anderson, Eike Falk; Cirdei, Bianca; Adzhiev, Valery; Tarini, Marco and Galin, EricWe present an outstanding undergraduate research project that has resulted in the development of a parametrised method for simulating drying and decaying vegetable matter from the fruits category, taking into account the biological characteristics of the decaying fruit. This work was awarded 1st place in the undergraduate category of the ACM Student Research Competition at SIGGRAPH 2018.
