K.; Creem-Regehr, Sarah H.; Meyer, Miriah; Gleicher, Michael and Viola, Ivan and Leitte, HeikeTwo of the primary reasons rainbow color maps are considered ineffective trace back to the idea that they implicitly discretize encoded data into hue-based bands, yet no research addresses what this discretization looks like or how consistent it is across individuals. This paper presents an exploratory study designed to empirically investigate the implicit discretization of common spectral schemes and explore whether the phenomenon can be modeled by variations in lightness, chroma, and hue. Our results suggest that three commonly used rainbow color maps are implicitly discretized with consistency across individuals. The results also indicate, however, that this implicit discretization varies across different datasets, in a way that suggests the visualization community's understanding of both rainbow color maps, and more generally effective color usage, remains incomplete.Item Visualization of Spatial and Temporal Pollution Exposure through a Temporal Ordered Spacial Matrix(The Eurographics Association, 2019) Wootton, Dylan R.; Goffin, Pascal; Meyer, Miriah; Madeiras Pereira, João and Raidou, Renata GeorgiaPoor air quality impacts public health due to increased incidences of serious health conditions; yet the data obtained about pollution is recorded at coarse resolution. Such resolution fails to capture known microclimates of air pollution and can pose a health hazard to individuals of sensitive groups when outdoors. AQ Route Explorer is a tool that visualizes spatial and temporal pollution trends for a given path of interest, helping people to make more informed personal health decisions.
