Item Assessing the Geographical Structure of Species Richness Data with Interactive Graphics(The Eurographics Association, 2021) Morgades, Pauline; Slingsby, Aidan; Moat, Justin; Dutta, Soumya and Feige, Kathrin and Rink, Karsten and Zeckzer, DirkUnderstanding species richness is an important aspect of biodiversity studies and conservation planning, but varying collection effort often results in insufficient data to have a complete picture of species richness. Species accumulation curves can help assess collection completeness of species richness data, but these are usually considered by discrete area and do not consider the geographical structure of collection. We consider how these can be adapted to assess the geographical structure of species richness over geographical space. We design and implement two interactive visualisation approaches to help assess how species richness data varies over continuous geographical space. We propose these designs, critique them, report on the reactions of four ecologists and provide perspectives on their use for assessing geographical incompleteness in species richness.Item Towards Visualisation Specifications from Multilingual Natural Language Queries using Large Language Models(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Hutchinson, Maeve; Slingsby, Aidan; Jianu, Radu; Madhyastha, Pranava; Gillmann, Christina; Krone, Michael; Lenti, SimoneIn this paper, we present an empirical demonstration of a prompt-based learning approach, which utilizes pre-trained Large Language Models to generate visualization specifications from user queries expressed in natural language. We showcase the approach's flexibility in generating valid specifications in languages other than English (e.g., Spanish) despite lacking access to any training samples. Our findings represent the first steps towards the development of multilingual interfaces for data visualization that transcend English-centric systems, making them more accessible to a wider range of users.Item Visual Analysis of Reactionary Train Delay from an Agent Based Model(The Eurographics Association, 2019) Slingsby, Aidan; Hyde, Jonathan; Turkay, Cagatay; Madeiras Pereira, João and Raidou, Renata GeorgiaWe design and apply interactive visualisation to help understand reactionary (knock-on) delay in trains using a set of 'Monte- Carlo' style Agent Based Model runs, and to help train operating companies design interventions. Our interactive graphics indicate the locations where primary delay occurs, where reactionary delay occurs, the types of primary delays, how these vary across the runs and the mechanisms of delay. We continue to work with the train industry to refine these methods. Interactive visualisation still has unexplored potential to help make Agent Based Models more explainable.Item Visualization of Tonal Harmony for Jazz Lead Sheets(The Eurographics Association, 2022) Bunks, Carey; Weyde, Tillman; Slingsby, Aidan; Wood, Jo; Agus, Marco; Aigner, Wolfgang; Hoellt, ThomasJazz improvisation is the extemporaneous expression of melody, and musicians commonly base their performances on chord progressions given by lead sheets. It is standard practice to commit a progression to memory by analyzing it for common patterns. This paper presents a visualization design intended to help reduce the amount of cognitive work needed to assimilate a song's chords and harmonic patterns. It does this using color, shapes, and glyphs as visual variables to convey meaning about tonal centers, chord functions, and harmonic structure.
