Item Accurate Visualization of Galaxy Velocity Fields from Three-Dimensional Integral Field Spectroscopy Data(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Uchiki, Rikuo; Boussejra, Malik Olivier; Zhu, Liyu; Takeshima, Yuriko; Matsubayashi, Kazuya; Uemura, Makoto; Fujishiro, Issei; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanIn recent years, integral field spectroscopy (IFS) has become a major methodology in observational astronomy. Visual analysis of galactic motions is expected to play a crucial role in discovering the physical properties of galaxies. This poster presents a novel method for visualizing galaxy-specific motions using an emerging visual programming environment, Advanced Framework for Learning Astrophysical Knowledge (aflak), for visual analysis of three-dimensional IFS data. We demonstrate that the line-of-sight velocity of each region of galaxies can be more accurately visualized by coupling two specific kinds of aflak macros for generating position-velocity diagrams and deriving velocity fields.Item Data Driven Multi-Hazard Risk Visualization(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Sharma, Ritesh; Tomson, Ayme; Lobato, Emilio; Kallmann, Marcelo; Padilla, Lace; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanThis work presents an approach for visualizing aggregate spatial risk data for natural hazards in a way which is not restricted by fixed geographical boundaries and is intended to improve multi-risk awareness in at-risk populations. First, spatial proximity is analyzed to organize occurrences in clusters and the convex hull of each cluster is created in order to define our visualization regions. Then, each region is assigned a risk factor value which is visualized by selecting a color scheme specific to the data variation. The application of this technique is demonstrated using the state of California as a region of interest.Item Designing Effective Network Visualization Representations of Disinformation Operations - Improving DisInfoVis(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Pavliuc, Alexandra Melania; Dykes, Jason; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanPractitioners working to understand, combat, and inform the public about disinformation operations need tools to analyse these complex social phenomena, and communicate their findings to stakeholders. Temporal network visualization presents a means of analysing and communicating this dynamic socio-technical phenomenon, but comes with visualization design challenges that can be addressed through judicious iterative design and empirical evaluation. We present a path towards tailoring temporal network visualizations for DisInfoVis through qualitative evaluation, and outline a design for representing disinformation operations in social media networks informed by this process and used in public communication.Item Evaluation of Mesh Compression and GPU Ray Casting for Tree Based AMR data in VTK(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Roche, Antoine; Dubois, Jérôme; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanAdaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) methods are common in scientific workloads, and very useful during analyses and visualization. In this work, we aim to reduce memory and storage footprint of AMR data. We adapt tree compression (SVDAG) and GPU Ray Cast rendering, created for Computer Graphics surface scenes, for volume data from Scientific Visualization workloads. In particular, experiments have been conducted with the native Tree-Based AMR (TB-AMR) data structure in the Visualization ToolKit (VTK): vtkHyperTreeGrid (HTG). A HTG to SVDAG online converter has been implemented as well as a multi-SVDAG extension. Results showed several orders of magnitude memory footprint reduction thanks to the compression and efficient Ray Cast rendering. Furthermore, serialization to SVDAG enabled almost instant loading and display of simulation data instead of minutes. Overall our experiments show great benefits, and this shows great promises to further improve TB-AMR analyses.Item ResFlow: Visualizing Global Resource Flows(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Navarra, Carlo; Eliasson, Karin; Karjalainen, Jesper; Wiréhn, Lotten; Cooper, Matthew; Neset, Tina S.; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanGlobal resource flows and indicators for emerging challenges relevant to the realization of sustainable development goals are of high interest for research on sustainable development and geopolitics. Such complex sets of information require advanced methodological approaches that enable effective communication of data and participatory data exploration. To address this need, we present ResFlow, an interactive web-based application for the visualization and exploration of flow data, in particular for analysing resource flows between countries. ResFlow visualizes resource flows to and from countries using 3D arcs and provides tailored interaction and filtering techniques to facilitate flexible exploration of the data at hand.Item A Tool to Help lay out Multiple View Visualisations Guided by View Analysis(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Al-maneea, Hayder Mahdi; Roberts, Jonathan C.; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanIn this paper, we present 'Layouts for Multiple View' (LMV), a tool that helps users build, control and save multiple view visualisations simply and easily using a bespoke grammar. The tool incorporates template multiple view layout strategies as quantified from prior research on view analysis, and the user can build different layouts by defining the grammar, or through the linked visual interface. LMV saves the multiple view layout as a JSON file, including all the details of the layout and attributes of the visualisation, which can be subsequently loaded and adapted or used to create dashboards. LMV guides the user to (i) design and control the multiple view layout, (ii) add data and allocate a specific visualisation technique for each view, and (iii) to adapt specific appearance properties of the layout.Item Visual Analysis of Car-hailing Reimbursement Data for Overtime(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Liu, Qiang Qiang; Li, Quan; Tang, Chun Feng; Lin, Huan Bin; Peng, Zhen Hui; Li, Zhi Wei; Chen, Tian Jian; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanCompensation management is one of the most important elements of personnel management. One type of compensation is traffic supplementary pay for the overtime employees. Conventional analysis of the traffic reimbursement focuses on the basic financial statistics such as the expenditure trends and rankings among different departments in the company. However, it largely ignores the wellbeing of the individuals and their residential distribution that can help improve the effectiveness of compensation strategies. In this work, we propose a visual analytics system based on a company's traffic reimbursement data for the overtime. It assists the compensation managers in understanding the overtime employees' commuting status and providing more indirect compensation benefits for the employees. A user case confirms the efficacy of our system and experts' feedback also suggests that our approach indeed helps them better tackle the problem of analyzing the car-hailing reimbursement data for the overtime.Item A Web-based Visual Analytics Application for Biological Networks(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Krone, Michael; Dräger, Andreas; Cobanoglu, Ebru; Harke, Manuel Otto; Hoene, Miriam; Weigert, Cora; Lehmann, Rainer; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, StefanModern high-throughput methods enable rapidly obtaining transcriptomics data, which includes information about the expression rate of genes. The expression rates are usually given as fold change, which describes the over- or under-expression of each gene. Each gene can be part of one or more biological pathways. A pathway models the interactions between molecules in an organism that lead to a particular chemical change. Consequently, many applications in medical research need to analyze the impact of gene expression changes on the biological pathways of an organism. It allows concluding diseases or other conditions of the organism. We present a web-based visual analytics application that facilitates exploring the network of biological pathways corresponding to a given set of genes. The network is constructed from pathways derived from an external database. Users can interactively zoom and filter the network and get details on demand. Our application is currently work in progress and is developed in close collaboration with medical researchers. In subsequent steps, we strive to add more features, such as the ability to compare data from different individuals or to visualize time series data. Furthermore, we want to extend our application to visualize not just transcriptomics but multi-omics data.
