It is based upon several groups of criteria. One group of criteria is concerned with performance, by which we understand here the memory requirements and time requirements for programs using GKS functions. A program that measures the performance of GKS packages is presented. Results of this evaluation method with several commercially available GKS implementations are described in summary. A checklist for evaluation of standard graphics packages is added as an appendix.Item GKS Review Workshop(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1987)Item Graphic Acquisition and Retrieval of Stereochemical Information(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1987) Dubois, J.E.; Cayzergues, P.; Georgoulis, G.Stereochemistry concepts deal with situations associated with chiral arrangement of atoms in a molecule. The existence of stereocompounds implies different physical properties associated with local and global structural space dissymetry. A left and right hand relationship is a typical local example of such concepts. In this paper, we show how it is possible to include stereochemistry in a comprehensive system allowing for acquisition, storage and retrieval of chemical information. Special emphasis has been placed on the description of the graphic interface on the level of both data acquisition and retrieval. Various graphic coding procedures associated with stereochemical handling are analysed. A specialized input device, optimized for handling of chemical and structural data in bulk, is presented.Item Graphical Analysis of Complex O.D.E. This algorithm is oriented towards raster graphics and uses image memories as job areas. The algorithm is based on the encoding of polygon boundaries by contour following so that all topologies are successfully processed. Thus, concave or convex polygons, holed or not, including possibly duplicate points can be filled. It is quite robust and easy to implement. It uses systematic encoding without special cases. Only two bits for encoding are needed and, thereby, it is suitable for hardware implementation. This algorithm can be used in many fields such as image synthesis, 3D objects or mathematical surface displays with hidden parts.Item Logical Input Devices and Interaction(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1987) van Liere, R.; ten Hagen, P. J. W.The logical input device model, as is adopted in the standardized graphics package GKS, has been an accepted basis for producing device-independent graphics systems. However, when used in highly interactive graphical applications, the logical input device model does not provide sufficient support for a number of fundamental issues inherent to interaction. This paper reopens a discussion which questions the functionality provided by the logical input device model when brought in conjunction with interaction. In particular, the logical input device model does not support the notion of input/output symmetry.CR Categories: 1.3.4 [Computer graphics]: Graphics utilities- graphics packages- 1.3.6 [Computer graphics]: Methodology and techniques- device independence, interaction techniquesItem Making Drawings Talk: Pictures in Minds and Machines(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1987) Bijl, AartInteractions between human minds and machine systems will be discussed, drawing on experience of CAD and focusing on modes of expression. Free forms of text and drawings pose deep questions when interpretations have to be"meaningful" to different knowledge representations - especially in loosely defined application fields. What should we expect from technology?Item Offers to EUROGRAPHICS Members(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1987)
