    The Archeomatica Project: Towards a New Application of the Computer Graphics in Archaeology

    In this paper the project Archeomatica of Catania University dedicated to Minoan civilization and Cretan culture is presented. The project carried out by experts of information technology and archaeological research provides the creation of realistic 3D models based on the data recorded during excavations that are digital upgradeable archives to add to the traditional graphic and photographic documentations. In particular two case-studies of 3D reconstructions of monuments of prehistoric and proto-historic archaeology, realized by a "philological approach", are presented.

    Towards Advanced Volumetric Display of the Human Musculoskeletal System

    We report on our research results on effective volume visualization techniques for medical and anatomical data. Our volume rendering approach employs GPU accelerated out-of-core direct rendering algorithms to fully support high resolution, 16 bits, raw medical datasets as well as segmentation. Images can be presented on a special light field display based on projection technology. Human anatomical data appear to moving viewers floating in the light field display space and can be interactively manipulated.

    Multiple Uses of 3D Scanning for the Valorization of an Artistic Site: the Case of Luni

    The heritage site of Luni is a very interesting location, which tells the story of an ancient roman colony, and of an area where different cultures left their heritage. In particular, the remains of the pediments of an ancient temple represent a very interesting case and an open field of study for art historians. The scanning of a group of statue belonging to the pediments showed that the produced 3D models could be used in several ways, not only for archival and presentation purposes but also to provide interactive support for the work of the restorers and the scholars. In particular, the use of 3D models to propose and validate hypothesis about the original position of the fragments in the context of the fronton could be an alternative solution to the direct manipulation of them. Moreover, the analysis of the original color of the statues, and the representation different hypothesis about the ancient appearance can be produced through the interactive editing of the 3D models of the statues. In this paper we present the scanning campaign which resulted in the acquisition of five statues,the preliminary results of some of the uses of the models produced with acquired data, and a brief description of other possible future applications of them. This shows how 3D scanning can be considered by now a mature technology for the support of restoration and preservation of Cultural Heritage.

    Medical Image Segmentation using Level Sets

    Computer-aided diagnosis for pre-operative planning and post-operative outcome evaluation is widely considered an important topic for next-generation surgery. 3D models of the patients' anatomical structures can be highly valuable in this context. The accuracy of these models is strongly dependent on the classification and segmentation algorithms acting at the very first stage of the modelling chain. A promising class of segmentation algorithms is related to level set methods. Here, we briefly review some applications of level sets to medical image segmentation.

    Environment based on Augmented Reality and Interactive Simulation for Product Design Review

    The aesthetic impact of a product is an important parameter that makes the difference among products technologically similar and with same functionalities. Product shape, which is strictly connected to the aesthetic impact, has different meanings if seen from the design and the engineering point of view. The conceptual design of shape of aesthetic products is usually performed by designers at the beginning of the product development cycle. Subsequent engineering design and studies, such as structural and fluid-dynamic analyses, lead to several design reviews where the original shape of the object is often modified. The design review process is time consuming, requires the collaboration and synchronization of activities performed by various experts having different competences and roles, and is performed using different tools and different product representations. Then, computer aided tools supporting conceptual design and analysis activities within the same environment are envisaged. The paper presents the conceptual description of an environment named PUODARSI that allows designers to modify the shape of a product and evaluate in real-time the impact of these changes on the results of the structural and fluid dynamic analyses in an Augmented Reality (AR) collaborative environment. Main problems in integrating tools developed for different purposes, such as, haptic interaction, FEM and CFD analyses, AR visualization concern the feasibility of the integration, the data exchange, and the choice of those algorithms that allow all that while guaranteeing low computational time. The paper describes the main issues related to the choice of hardware and software technologies, and the PUODARSI system implementation.

    Low Cost Finger Tracking on Flat Surfaces

    We present a flexible system to track the movements of a bare finger on a flat surface. The proposed system is able to discriminate whether the user is touching or just pointing at the surface. The system works using two webcams and a fast scanline-based algorithm. The initial setup of the two webcams is easy and fast. No markers, gloves, or other hand-held devices are required. Since the system is independent from the nature of the pointing surface, it is possible to use a screen or a projected wall as a virtual touchscreen. The complexity of the algorithms used by the system grows less than linearly with resolution, making the software layer very lightweight and suitable also for low-powered devices like embedded controllers.

    A Virtual-Reality-based Evaluation Environment for Wheelchair-mounted Manipulators

    The design of solutions for robotic extenders of wheelchairs must take into account both objective and subjective metrics for everyday activities in human environments. Virtual Reality (VR) constitutes a useful tool to effectively test design ideas and to verify performance criteria. This paper presents the development of a simulation environment, where three different manipulators to be mounted on a commercially available wheelchair have been considered. Experimental results are discussed in a significant case study, based upon users' feedback.

    Eulerview with Projections: Non Hierarchical Visualisation

    EulerView is a novel resource management tool, enabling the representation of non-hierarchical categorisation structures within which to place resources. Since the initial incarnation for use in file-system management, it has been integrated with other systems, such as Flickr to produce Eulr, which assists in user manipulation of photo tags. Another system currently under development is Eulicious, a url management tool integrated with delicious the social bookmarking site. We bring these areas together, enabling the management of different types of resources, such as photo and url's, for user convenience. User feedback obtained from Eulr testing indicated that certain extra facilities would assist in their development of EulerView categorisation structures. To address this user request, we have introduced projections which capture information, within our broader non-hierarchical structure, in a similar manner to symbolic links in hierarchical structures. This will enable an easy transfer of user knowledge, whilst still providing the greater power of a non-hierarchical structure to be utilised when desired.

    Practical and Robust MLS-based Integration of Scanned Data

    The paper proposes a set of techniques for improving the quality of MLS surfaces reconstructed from point clouds that are composed by the union of many scanned range maps. The main idea of those techniques is that the range-map structure should be exploited during the reconstruction process and not lost in the uniform point soup that is usually fed into reconstruction algorithms; on this purpose a set of per-range-map weighting schemes are proposed. The presented weighting schemes allow to cope with some of the various issues that usually arise during the integration of point clouds composed by set of range maps, like tangible alignment errors, anisotropic error on sensor data and sensible difference in sampling quality.

    Combining Segmentations for Understanding and Annotating 3D Objects

    In the last years, 3D objects have become widely available and are used in many application domains. Thus it is becoming fundamental to develop techniques for extracting and maintaining the knowledge embedded into 3D models. Such knowledge usually cannot be simply identified and strongly depends on the specific application domain. In this paper, we present our work in combining segmentation and merging procedures in order to segment a manifold object. We also provide an interface for browsing the obtained decomposition discovering, for each components, the associated properties. This activity has been carried out as part of our semantic web system called be-SMART.

    Topological Operations on Triangle Meshes Using the OpenMesh Library

    Recent advances in acquisition and modelling techniques led to generating an exponentially increasing amount of 3D shapes available both over the Internet or in specific databases. While the number grows it becomes more and more difficult to keep an organized knowledge over the content of this repositories. It is commonly intended that in the near future 3D shapes and models will be indexed and searched using procedure and instruments mimicking the same operations performed on images while using algorithms, data structures and instruments peculiar to the domain. In this context it is thus important to have tools for automatic characterization of 3D shapes, and skeletons and partitions are the two most prominent ones among them. In this paper we will describe an experience of building some of this tools on the top of a popular and robust library for manipulating meshes (OpenMesh). The preliminary results we present are promising enough to let us expect that the sum of the tools will be a useful aid to improving indexing and retrieval of digital 3D objects. The work presented here is part of a larger project: Three-Dimensional Shape Indexing and Retrieval Techniques (3-SHIRT), in collaboration with the Universities of Genoa, Padua, Udine, and Verona.

    Fractal Compression Approach for Efficient Interactive Terrain Rendering on the GPU

    This paper describes an efficient technique for the rendering of large terrain surfaces. The technique is based on a simple rings structure: a sequence of concentric rings at different resolutions and centeredon the viewer's position. Each ring is represented by a set of patches at identical resolutions. Rings near the viewer have a finer resolution than the rings further from the viewer. At runtime, the patches within the rings change resolution based on the viewer's position. The GPU decodes in real time height maps encoded by a fractal compressor from which sample the height component of the terrain. Since adjacent patches of different rings can disagree on the resolution of common edge GPU stitches the meshes in order to avoid any cracks or degenerate triangles. The renderedmeshes ensure the absence of cracks that may cause the appearance of visual artifacts. In addition, a tile manager support is evaluated in order to maintain terrain datasets on disk storage avoiding a costly load of the entire datasets into the memory.

    A Survey on Exploiting Grids for Ray Tracing

    Grid is one of the first data structure introduced at the very beginning of computer graphics. Grids are used in several applications of computer graphics, especially in rendering algorithms. Lately, in ray tracing dynamic scenes, grid has received attention for its appealing linear time building time. In this paper, we aim to survey several aspects behind the use of grids in ray tracing. In particular we investigate grid traversal algorithms, building techniques and several approaches for hierarchical grids.

    On Estimating the Effectiveness of Temporal and Spatial Coherence in Parallel Ray Tracing

    In this paper we estimate the effectiveness of exploiting coherence in Parallel Ray Tracing. We present a load- balancing technique which divides the original rendering problem in balanced subtasks and distribute them to independent processors through a Prediction Binary Tree (PBT). Furthermore the PBT allows to exploit temporal coherence among successive image frames. At each new frame, it updates the current PBT using a cost function which uses the previous rendering time as cost estimate. We also provide two heuristics which take advantage of data-locality. We assess the effectiveness of the proposed solution by running two experiments. The £rst one aims to investigate the accurancy of predictions made using the PBT. Results show that such predictions are quite accurate even considering a heavily unbalanced scene and a fast moving camera. The second experiment evaluates the two locality-aware heuristics showing a modest improvement.

    MightyMind3D. A 3D Mindmapping Software Using Glove Interaction

    Nowadays there are several companies offering many different kinds of mindmapping and visual learning software. These products are used every day by a lot people because they are certainly tools that can improve productivity as well as creativity and learning. But all the existing mindmapping programs have something in common: they create maps and diagrams in 2D only. Purpose of this paper is showing the idea of applying the impressive power of 3D graphics to this particular field together with an unusual but suitable way of interaction through a P5 glove: this idea was developed and became MightyMind3D. One of the main goals of this study was to find a good way to show the same information of a 2D MindMap in a 3D space, paying attention to all the possible advantages that could be gained compared to 2D programs. The results achieved are satisfying and the project has many aspects that can be matter of future development.

    IMPROVE: the experience from a FP6 EU project

    This paper aims at introducing the results of the EU FP6 project IMPROVE to the Italian community showing the results and specifically those achieved by Graphitech within its context. The project aimed at delivering advanced visualization and interaction technologies in the field of design review. In terms of hardware the project has delivered innovative technologies for lightweight near-to-the-eye displays and for tiled stereoscopic large size displays. In terms of software technologies the project has delivered novel interaction paradigms which are suitable for such hardware. The achievements of IMPROVE have been integrated into a collaborative mixed reality product development environment, showcased and evaluated in two application scenarios: collaborative product design in the car industry and architectural design. Specifically a final user test for the automotive scenario was undertaken at Elasis, Naples which was one of IMPROVE partners.

    Indirect Illuminance Computation on GPU for Lighting CAD using CIE Basic Method

    In this work, we focus our attention to near real time illuminance for Lighting CAD. The implemented model is the Basic Method CIE which is a simplified method used in interior lighting design; a pre-computational phase is required, for form factor evaluation, and it is done by the CPU while GPU is used for the direct component evaluation to render the pseudo color map of the computed result. Our approach offers a further improvement in comparison with traditional lighting CAD, since it allows lighting designer to obtain an interactive solutions and the interactivity is reached using graphic hardware, in fact the pre-computation process is independent from the position of luminaries into the scene. The presented method is applied on a simple geometry, a parallepided room, where the surface is assumed to show a Lambertian's behaviour, but the model can be improved to remove these limitation.

    MeshLab: an Open-Source Mesh Processing Tool

    The paper presents MeshLab, an open source, extensible, mesh processing system that has been developed at the Visual Computing Lab of the ISTI-CNR with the helps of tens of students. We will describe the MeshLab architecture, its main features and design objectives discussing what strategies have been used to support its development. Various examples of the practical uses of MeshLab in research and professional frameworks are reported to show the various capabilities of the presented system.
